The Shen Center for Integrative Medicine recently opened with a belief in helping people reach — and sustain — their optimal health with a team of dedicated holistic providers. Shen Center is an interdisciplinary group of Traditional Chinese Medicine and complementary medicine practitioners.

We believe in supporting and nurturing the natural healing process of the body, while educating and cultivating a lifelong approach to a healthier lifestyle. Our patients are treated with utmost attention, respect and care.

A Different Approach to Holistic Medicine
Newly opened in a landmark building on fashionable 57th Street off 5th Avenue, the Shen Center integrates several different alternative medicine practices in a serene setting, for both practitioner and patient.

The Shen Center combines a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to understanding the areas of disharmony with complementary modern healthcare practices. Chinese medicine combines the use of acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, massage, exercise, meditation and a change of lifestyle, intended to reinstate the harmonious flow of Qi (pronounced “chi”, meaning vital energy).

Our goal is to offer diverse holistic services in one setting, including: Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic care, psychotherapy, naturopathic services, homeopathy, herbal therapy, facials, massage therapies and other holistic services.

Our holistic practitioners collaborate to individually treat many conditions, including:

Infertility:
Recent studies had shown that the use of acupuncture may improve the chances of getting pregnant. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to improve both male and female fertility. In our clinic, we have added another tier of fertility treatment by combining acupuncture with other holistic modalities, such as psychotherapy, massage and nutrition to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. These modalities can help in combination with conventional treatment, such as IVF, or when a patient prefers to try and conceive naturally. It also helps with reducing the stress typically accompanying these trying times. We are proud of our many stories of successful pregnancies that have resulted from both natural and accompanying western medicine treatments.

Pregnancy (prenatal, labor, postnatal):
Chinese Medicine can provide great support during pregnancy. During pregnancy there are various limitations on taking medications that may affect the embryo; however, acupuncture, massage therapies and other holistic services can provide a natural solution to many of the ailments during pregnancy. In our center, we offer prenatal massage and periodic maintenance during pregnancies, including a treatment known as “pretty baby treatment”. We also provide holistic services for specific pregnancy conditions, such as breech presentations and situations that necessitate being induced. After the delivery, Chinese Medicine can help the mother recover from the labor process and support the mother’s health, encouraging milk production and a healthy and quick return of energy.

Pediatric Care:
Acupuncture is a great modality for addressing many pediatric ailments. Although most children can tolerate the use of needles, there are other modalities that can be used in order to stimulate the acupuncture points without needles, such as shoni shin, cutenious electro stimulation etc. Conditions treated include but are not limited to ADD/ADHD, Autism, chronic ear infections, allergies, asthma, eczema, and many more.
We make the visit at our center a friendly and positive experience for the child so most children are glad to come visit us again. We make it our goal to not force any procedure on the child and encourage the child to cooperate and participate in the treatment. Our center also offers different kinds of complementary treatments, such as psychotherapy for the child and family.

Perimenopausal & Menopausal Symptoms (Transitions of Life):
For many women, the transition into menopause and changes in hormonal balance is sometimes accompanied with a myriad of symptoms, ranging from annoying to life-altering conditions. These symptoms include: hot flashes, irritability, mood changes, insomnia, osteoperosis, vaginal dryness and different types of digestive issues (ie., irritable bowels, constipitation, diarrhea). Recent research has proven that Chinese Medicine treatment is able to successfully restore hormonal balance and significantly alleviate these symptoms. In our center, we offer a holistic combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, massage therapies and nutrition to help with these symptoms without the use of synthetic hormones enabling one to go through this transition with ease.

Pain Management (fibromyalgia, arthritis, injuries, stress):
The hallmark of acupuncture in the west is pain management. There have been many studies that show the effectiveness of acupuncture with alleviating conditions such as: low back pain, arthritis of the knee, sciatica, neck pain and many more. Suffice it to say that in the west, we can find acupuncture in the pain management department of hospitals. Acupuncture has also been shown to be an effective treatment for fibromylagia, headaches and even menstrual pain. In our office we offer a holistic approach to pain where acupuncture, chiropractic and massage therapies are combined to address and resolve pain.

Overweight:
Obesity and conditions of overweight has become an epidemic in the US. It is caused not only by poor dietary choices that we make but also by the stress that is prominent in our lives. In our center, we believe that a healthy diet is the foundation for good health and so we have joined with Bliss Acupuncture to offer an extensive detox and weight loss program.

HEALTHY LIVING TIPS FROM MOSHE HELLER:
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, one believes in the need to live according to the seasons to keep healthy. Here are some tips for healthy summer living.

The summer in Chinese Medicine is associated with the fire phase, which is closely related to the expression of “Yang”. It is represented by outward activity, expansion, growth and creativity. As such, the summer is a time for going outside and engaging in outdoor activity. The summer is a time to be joyful and enjoy the bounty of nature outdoors.

In terms of diet, one should eat brightly colored vegetables and fruits and enjoy the creativity of making beautiful meals. We need to cook lightly on high heat for short periods of time. The summer is the time to enjoy a little bit of spice, pungency and flavor in our foods. It is also a great time to steam the vegetables lightly and quickly and keep a “crunch” in each bite.

Because of the summer heat, we lose a lot of vital minerals and oils through our sweat. The sweating proces may cause weakness if we don’t make sure to replenish the minerals and oils which are abundant in a diverse diet of vegetables and fruits.

In the summer, we tend to want to eat cold foods, but we have to beware that ingesting too many cold foods can weaken our internal organs. This coldness can interfere with our digestion. In CM, cold causes contractions, which prevent us from being able to sweat and regulate our body temperature. Consume cold ice creams and iced drinks in extreme moderation (it is probably best to avoid them).

We need to eat more cooling fresh foods, such as salads, different kinds of sprouts, cucumber, tofu and different kind of leaves (arugula, mizuna and watercress).

Use the barbeques and grill the fresh vegetable like zucchini, butternut squash and yams.

In China, it is recommended to drink a cool summer tea made from chrysthatmum flowers and mint. It is believed that if you drink that ta during summer it will prevent your body from overheating and causing imbalances in the winter.

Try to enjoy the sun in moderation during the morning and late afternoon, at this time the sun rays are milder and you can benefit from sun exposure that promotes the production of Vitamin D.
